U CAN GROW PACKSHEDS

Creating a successful program for agri-preneurs requires a multi-modular program linked to multiple PackSheds. These start as small packhouses and have the potential to grow, with expansion ideally including multiple entrepreneurial opportunities for water-preneures, plastic-preneurs, hair & beauty-preneurs, bakery, etc.

A packhouse is central to the U Can Grow model. On the one side it It not only provides training, quality farming inputs, track & trace and aggregation of harvests, but also. On the other side, the packhouse will grade, pack, and supply products to the off- take clients making sure that all product sourced is sold. It is ideal to start small and hence the first priority is the establishment of a modularised packshed that includes:

  • A 140 sq meter facility
  • Telecommunications hub
  • Solar, water and waste system
  • Farm store
  • Worm farm & compositing equipment
  • Cold room
  • Receiving, grading and weighing areas
  • Dispatch area
  • Meeting/training/ storage room
  • Administration office
  • Contracts for at least 10 ha of products
  • Contracts to at least 5 off-take agreements
  • A team of at least 10,
    4 in farming
    4 in the packhouse
    1 manager and
    1 administrator
  • 200 home gardens  a path to commercialisation
  • The footprint should ideally include at least one agro-processing or micro-enterprise (refer below for options)

These hubs will be modularised and thus can be placed anywhere and will be supported both in person and through the technology by the UCanGrow Executive Program Office
